Grade 8 English introduces students to the idea of analysis--something that will be used heavily in high school and beyond.  Students write analytical pieces that focus on the elements of both novels and poetry.  Students collaborate over tasks such as creating a film and planning an advertising campaign.  They also spend time individually imagining and creating a short story, being sure to deliberately think about how each element of the narrative such as plot, character, conflict, theme, setting and point-of-view interacts with the other elements. All pieces of writing are revised and edited so that students become accustomed to creating high quality pieces of communication. Mini units are taught as needed to address grammar, spelling and learning issues, and independent reading is encouraged throughout the year, as students get in the habit of creating personal reading goals.  This year we will hold a Speech Tournament in the middle school.  All grade 7 and 8 students will deliver a speech, drama piece or poem as part of that event, and the public will be invited to listen.
